Running with Audiobooks

Going for a long run is pretty much the hardest thing for me to do. I love doing HIIT workouts, going on hikes, walking as transportation… but distance running is just so hard for me. It’s not just that I get tired and my body hurts, which it does, but I lose motivation and I get bored. Kayla Itsines’s workout plan calls for 40 minutes of LISS (low intensity, steady state) cardio 3 times a week, and keeping myself from getting distracted while going for a run for 40 minutes is so hard for me.

Distraction is a big part of my inability to keep going. I’ll run for 15 minutes, remember everything on my to-do list (or just that I want to go home and watch Netflix and cook) and decide to turn around. Cue audiobooks. I love listening to music when I’m doing a super high energy workout, but if I’m going out for a long run, thrillers and suspense novels are what keep me going. I can fully immerse myself in the story and forget about that slow cooker soup I wanted to make, the last episode of Stranger Things that still needs to be watched, and the fact that my left knee really doesn’t feel great. Books with intrigue and suspense are what really does it for me. I need my heart rate to be lifted not just by my workout, but also by the thrill of the story. Here are some books that really got me running hard this summer:

Before the Fall by Noah Hawley

Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

Underground Airlines by Ben Winters

The Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll

I know that listening to audiobooks won’t work for a lot of people, but if you’re like me and you can’t stand to listen to upbeat music while you’re clearly running far slower than beat of the bass, maybe give it a try. And if you want book recommendations, I have plenty!
