“A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.”
When I first started working out, I thought I was limited in options when it came to working out. I imagined being a slave to the treadmill, which sounded torturous to me. It turns out, the options are endless when it comes to getting in a great sweat session, especially if you live in a big city. I was nervous and intimidated when it came to trying new things, especially classes, but you’ve got to step out of your comfort zone and get a little comfortable with being uncomfortable. You can’t find out what your like and dislike without trying it first.
Aerial fitness is a workout that consists of silk hammocks suspended in the air. The studio I’ve been to for aerial yoga is called Air Fit Now. There are different classes available depending on your fitness level or the workout your aiming for. Aerial yoga combines yoga with the silk hammock for a full body stretch that pushes your flexibility more than a standard yoga class. Foundation is a class that teaches you the basics. It’s great for first timers to learn how to use and balance on the hammock. The advanced class is called AIR, which is a class that incorporates yoga, barre, and Pilates on the silk hammocks. It’s very intense, and will get your heart pumping, body sweating, and feeling like a rock star. I went to my first aerial class over a year ago, and I’ve been back multiple times for yoga and AIR. The yoga is so relaxing and I love the deep stretch it gives me. AIR is intense but gratifying. Each class is different depending on the instructor, which allows you to learn new moves and techniques that you didn’t even think your body was capable of. Another plus is that the instructors let you play after classes because they know that the moves make perfect profiles profile pictures ☺
The first time I ever went to any type of cycling class was at Flywheel Sports. I walked into a dark room filled with cycling bikes in a stadium-style seating. An instructor came up and helped me adjust my bike to the right height and clip into the pedals. The room got darker and music instantly started playing as the instructor spoke to the class on a microphone. The music was choreographed perfectly to push us to past our limits. A board was displayed in the front of the room called the Torque Board, which showed the class their rank compared to other riders. As an extremely competitive individual, this motivated me even more to win the race against others and myself in the class. Trying Flywheel motivated me to sign up for a Triathlon and attending these classes helped me so much during my training. I’ve heard great things about Soul Cycle and Full Psycle too. I plan to try those soon!
Piloxing is a combination of Pilates and boxing. It includes power, speed, and agility. I attended my first class, and I was instantly in love with it. You get to wear ½ pounds gloves (This sounds a lot easier than it actually is) You’re moving and incorporating your arms with that weight throughout the entire class. You feel it during and after the class. I’m already planning on going again. It got my heart pumping, my body sweating, and I felt like a total badass.
To be totally honest, I used to hate yoga. I always thought that it was too slow, and I could never figure out how to relax because I would always think about things I had to do or could be doing instead of yoga. If you feel this way, give it another try. Yoga is wonderful. It gives you time to get away from any stress you’re carrying around. You’re able to step away from any distractions like work or your phone, and just focus on yourself and relax for once. There are so many options for yoga anywhere that you live whether you go to CorePower or Zen Yoga Garage. You can find something similar wherever you live. What’s great is that you can find yoga videos online to play in the comfort of your own home.
Cardiolates is the latest class I’ve tried. It was not what I expected at all, but in a good way! A friend told me to sign up for this, and when I walked into a room filled with mini trampolines, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. We were told to grab a towel and 2lb weights. Just minutes into class, I was already sweating. You’re able to incorporate every muscle, especially because you’re trying to balance, stand upright, and stay on the trampoline. Jumping is a lot easier too because the trampoline absorbs the weight instead of your joints, which is a lot easier on your body compared to running or a HIIT workout. Plus side, you feel like a little kid again.
I challenge you to get out there and try something new. Sign up for a new class, and step out of your comfort zone. You won’t be disappointed, and you may end up falling in love with a new workout or studio.
