Thirsty Thursday: Water Edition

Latest posts by Taylor (see all)

In college, Thirsty Thursday meant going out on a Thursday night with friends to a party at a dorm, frat, or bar. Now, Thirsty Thursday means meeting or surpassing my water intake goal for the day. No matter where you’re at in your life or what day of the week it is, you should always be trying to drink a lot of water.

Why does drinking water seem like such a challenge throughout the day, but when you go out with friends, drinking glass after glass of juice, soda, alcohol, etc. seems so easy? Drinking water doesn’t have to be a challenge for you. I used to go through an entire day of work not even drinking half of my water bottle, but I’ve found ways that work for me to make sure I’m staying hydrated.

Make it a Habit

Make it a habit to drink a glass of water when you wake up in the morning. Set a glass in the fridge or by your bed the night before, so it’s ready and waiting for you right when you wake up. Since you’ll be a little dehydrated from sleeping, drinking a glass first thing is a great way to rehydrate and wake you up for the day.

Drink a Glass Before Every Meal

By telling yourself: “I have to drink a bottle of water before every meal,” you’ll have to drink a glass before you can eat. This helps with reaching your water goal, but it also helps with overeating. Water will help you realize the difference between hunger and cravings.

Invest in a Water Bottle

I have tons of water bottles. I have one that I keep at work, one for my gym bag, one for my bike, and multiple for at home. Having a water bottle with you at all times is one of the easiest ways to stay hydrated. My favorites are:
Tone It Up Water Bottle
( – This bottle is one of my favorites. I’m a Tone It Up girl, so I drink from this daily. It has an option to sip or chug and a scale on the side, so you know how many ounces you’re getting in. It’s great because it doubles as a protein shaker bottle, too! Not a TIU Girl? You can get the same bottle here:
Liv Cycling Water Bottle – This bottle is great for biking. It keeps your water cool for up to two hours due to its double wall construction with foam layer. It fits perfectly on my bike and is easy to squeeze, which makes it perfect for any type of ride.
Hydrate Smart Water Bottle – This is a new type of water bottle that hasn’t even been released yet. I ordered it, but it’s still in the process of being made. It’s a connected water bottle that glows when you need to take a sip. If you’re falling behind on your water intake, this will definitely catch your attention to drink more throughout the day.

Hydration 101

Infuse Your Water

Let’s be honest… water doesn’t have as much flavor compared to other drink options which is why water may be a second or third choice to a majority of people. There’s a simple way to change this by adding fruit to your water. You can add any combination of fruit based on personal preference and infuse your water with that flavor to make it more enjoyable for you and your taste buds.

Use a Straw

Using a straw is a lot easier compared to sipping and chugging, and it helps with meeting your water goal because you’re able to drink a lot faster. This is one of the reasons why the Tone It Up Trimr bottle (listed above) is my favorite water bottle.

Set Timers

Set a timer or reminder on your work computer or personal phone to help you remember to drink water during the day. One of my friends, tiu_samanthakerry on Instagram, sets a timer for every 20 minutes, so it goes off three times in every hour. After it goes off three times, she goes and refills it.

Make a List

Personally, I try to aim for at least 64 ounces of water a day while at work. Since my water bottle is 16 ounces, it means that I have to drink 4 bottles of water. I love drawing an outline of a bottle or a water droplet in my planner so I can fill in once I’ve finished a bottle to keep track throughout the day.

Use an App

There are plenty of apps out there to keep track of your water intake. Check out this site to find one that meets your needs:

Hydrate While Out with Friends

Drinking water while going out can be a lot easier than you think. Try ordering drinks with water or sparkling water. Another way is to order a glass of water in between every alcoholic drink. This will leave you feeling better while out all night and especially when you wake up in the morning.

Think of Your Wallet

When you go out to eat, juice, soda, cocktails, mixed drinks, beer, etc. seem more appetizing than water because of the flavor. Unfortunately, those flavors come with extra calories, sugar, and a higher cost. Water is FREE. Think of all of the money that you put towards drinks at a bar or going out to eat. That adds up. You could save yourself money and live a little healthier without a lot of effort by replacing those drinks with water.
