Barre is a huge part of my life. I’ve made a career for myself as a barre instructor and am not planning any career changes. In fact, unless I wake up with amnesia one day, I plan to continue to be very heavily involved with barre for the rest of my life. Being constantly surrounded by the barre regime, I often assume everyone knows what it is…but a lot of people still don’t! Often when I say “barre class,” they instantly assume I teach bartending classes.
So, what is barre?
Barre is a hybrid workout that incorporates ballet, Pilates and yoga. It’s a low-impact routine that utilizes a ballet barre for stretching and balance. Because there are three styles of fitness meshing into one, you’ll also see a lot of variations between barre studios. Some studios may have more of a ballet feel, while others may be more grounded in yoga. Never be afraid to try different variations to find what fits you best.
Okay, so how does the workout benefit me?
Barre focuses on women’s “problem areas,” and the results are quick. By incorporating small isometric moves with an abundance of stretching, barre provides more definition in your arms, slimming in your thighs, a stronger core and an overall leaner longer you. Not only are results quick, but the addiction is real! Between the endorphins being released during and after class and the noticeable results, it won’t be long before you fall in love. I’m completely obsessed; I’m currently teaching up to 10 classes a week, and my body has never looked better. I owe it all to barre.
An added bonus is how great of job barre studios have done in bringing together a supportive group of like-minded individuals. Most barre classes feel like hanging out with a bunch of your friends…because you are! Although the workout primarily appeals to women, most studios also welcome men. So feel free to bring your boy to the barre where permitted; he will definitely enjoy and benefit from this powerful workout.
You can read as much as you want about barre classes, but don’t just take my word for it – you have to experience it for yourself! Many studios are using MINDBODY.com as a way to promote and share their info, including pricing and class schedules. Browse through MindBody’s free app to find a barre studio near you, and then dive in! If you are in Wisconsin, Kentucky, or Tennessee I highly recommend looking into Barre Company, but if you’re not, have fun finding where are you fit! Happy exploring!
