Life is busy enough as a mother these days, with work schedules, sports practices, after school activities, and maintaining a household. As we plunge head first into summer I find myself adding the pressure of a perfect bikini body into the mix! Yikes!
I should start by sharing I was a model for many years and had really fought towards a journey of self-acceptance. When you are judged on your appearance on a regular basis it can take a lot of positivity and maintaining a strong mindset to not take in all the criticism. As I have recently stepped out of that world, I find myself to be my own worst critic. In doing so I’ve managed to take my eye off the prize and the most important job I will ever have; modeling a healthy lifestyle and body image for my amazing, soon-to-be 11 year old daughter.
She is heading into middle school next year and will be faced with a whole new set of ideals as her world expands beyond our influence. I have always worked hard to speak body positivity into her life. Focusing on food as fuel, how it can increase your performance in both school and sports, staying active, and highlighting non-physical positive traits and characteristics as much as possible.
So what happens when your own self-esteem takes a beating? This past year has been tough and I find myself speaking not so kindly about the image I see in the mirror. I find myself comparing my journey to others and letting the setbacks hold me down a little longer each time. And with each blow I model less of the woman I want my daughter be. Ouch.
BUT. Today is a new day. I am refocused, I am determined, and I am hell-bent on reclaiming the woman I knew so well. We all have those times in our life when it all becomes too overwhelming to move forward, but it doesn’t have to be a life sentence! We are so fortunate to live in a time of women empowerment, body positivity, healthy living options, and a community focused on building each other up instead of competing. We have an audience that is watching our every move, listening to every word, and clinging to every memory. As we build this beautiful life let’s remember that every setback is not a reflection of the person we are, but a lesson to be learned. Let’s accept ourselves in the mind, body, and soul we have at this very moment. Only when we do this will be truly be able to take on the world with gratitude and secure happiness as we better ourselves and the future for the generation ahead.
I know the road ahead will be full of obstacles, such is life! I know together we can achieve greatness and look forward to seeing an uprising of young women loving life and spreading acceptance. It’s so amazing that it starts with us! Let’s make it the best summer ever!
