My eating habits before and after I work out are all over the place. I often do exactly what you’re not supposed to do and workout on an empty stomach, then wait an hour to eat after out of convenience, then stuff my face because by that point I’m starving. It’s really not conducive to a healthy lifestyle. Lately though, whenever I take a particularly hard class, especially my weekly trip to Sweatbox DC, where I burn a million calories, I’ve been following my workout with a light protein shake. My go-to post-workout shake is non-fat vanilla greek yogurt, skim milk, half a banana, and PB2 powdered peanut butter. The shake comes to around 250 calories and is full of protein for my post-workout recovery. It’s also delicious and satisfies my sweet tooth.
I have a ton of bad food habits, but that’s why I look to my wiser and frankly, more fit, friends to tell me what I should be doing… even if I don’t listen to them. Here’s what they eat when working out.
–Missy @missburlin – DC Pure Barre Instructor
Before I don’t eat much: A banana. Coffee. Maybe a hardboiled egg. If I haven’t had a meal in while need some fuel for my workout I’ll grab and an RX Bar – blueberry is my favorite!
After I have lots of lean protein, especially chicken. I need something that fills me, but typically I don’t eat carbs after a workout. You should have your carbs before for energy! Also after I’ll have wine… because it’s over.
–Jen @jackpot_fox – Bodypump Instructor, Gold’s
Before I work out I like to eat dried fruit – usually prunes or dates. I exercise in the morning so I just need something small.
After I like to have a proper breakfast – Bananas, shakes, or oats.
–Chelsey @chelseyweatherford – Assistant Manager, SoulCycle West End
Before I work out I love going to South Block Juice Co. and getting a PBJ Acai Bowl. It’s packed with peanut butter, bananas, blueberries, and almond milk.
After I’m way less healthy! Usually after I ride I’m either getting back to work so I forget to eat, or I go get a huge meal… like burger and fries, because I’ve waited so long that I’m starving!
–Taylor @taylorprochnow – Crossfitter, Balance Gym Foggy Bottom
Before I work out I eat strawberries – random I know but it’s the sweet craving!
I go to Crossfit in the evenings after work and before I eat dinner. After I work out I eat something salty like trail mix to stave off my hunger while making fish or chicken for dinner.
