All right, corny post alert. The holidays are just around the corner, my desk is decorated with twinkling lights, bows, and a gingerbread man from my Secret Santa, and I am feeling the Holiday spirit. Hard. My absolute favorite part of the Holidays is giving. I love finding the perfect gift for my friends and family. I love it when it’s so perfect they didn’t know they needed it. I love sitting down with my check book and giving year-end donations to my favorite charities. I love donating items to the local goodwill.
The reason I love this time of year so much is because I am so lucky to be surrounded by such good people in my life. My family and friends are so wonderful. We support each other. We love each other. When we need help, we are always there for each other. This past year has tested me in so many ways, and I absolutely would not have gotten through it without them.
My friends have been beyond wonderful. A couple of my months ago my dad passed away. It was not sudden; he had been sick for a year. From the day I found out about my dad’s illness, my friends have been nothing but supportive. They are constantly offering their aid in any way they can, whether that means coming to visit me, sending me a text, or even just distracting me with their own problems. When my dad died, they flew in from all over the country to be there for the service. I had to convince my friend in Chile not to spend her entire savings to fly home for the weekend to be with me. When I couldn’t handle the day, they acted as my own private security team, shepherding me out a back entrance of the Church so I could collect myself. Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to handle it.
I’m lucky to have such amazing friends who support me, but we all support each other. We read each other’s resumes and cover letters; we give each other advice on anything from IUD preference to boys (I guess it might be time to start saying men) to which moisturizer is best. We care deeply about each other’s families and friends outside of our little circle. We do what we can to help one another. Sometimes I am overwhelmed by how great they are. How did I get so lucky to have these incredible women in my life? I know a lot of people never have what I have, and I am so thankful.
Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Happy New Year! Happy Holidays! May peace be with you.
